Sexual Harassment and Misconduct within the NHS

Follow the conference on X #SexualSafetyIncidents

A joint investigation by The Guardian and BMJ revealed that NHS hospitals in England documented a total of more than 35,606 instances termed "sexual safety incidents” from 2017 - 2022. Nevertheless, these incidents frequently did not lead to punitive measures.

The General Medical Council (GMC) released its Good Medical Practice 2024 on 22 August 2023. This comes at a time when there is increasing awareness of the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace, including in the NHS. The new guidance sets out the standards that doctors are expected to uphold in their professional lives. One of the key changes in the new guidance is the inclusion of a specific section on sexual harassment. This inclusion is significant because it sends a clear message that sexual harassment is not tolerated in the medical profession. The guidance also provides doctors with clear guidance on what constitutes sexual harassment and what they should do if they witness or experience it.

This conference provides a comprehensive exploration of the sensitive issue of sexual harassment and misconduct among clinicians within the NHS. Through four impactful sessions, attendees will gain a deep understanding of the complexities, consequences, and pathways toward creating a safe and respectful healthcare environment. The conference aims to empower attendees with knowledge, tools, and strategies to contribute to the prevention and intervention of such incidents and foster positive cultural change within the healthcare system.

“A survey of 2,458 doctors by the BMA in 2021 shows that 31% of women and 23% of men respondents experienced unwanted physical conduct in their workplace, while 56% of women and 28% of men respondents received unwanted verbal conduct related to their gender”

British Medical Association

“Sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination are entirely unacceptable. Where workplace cultures of this kind of behaviour go unchecked, they are detrimental to wellbeing, performance, and patient safety.”

Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen, Chair of GMC (Aug 2023)
