Living Well with Dysphagia in Care Homes

Fri, 21 Feb 2025

Virtual, Online

We will start the masterclass looking at the new single assessment framework and how this may now affect the way CQC will observe mealtimes using the evidence categories to guide data collection and  align to the new quality statements.

We will look at The Care Quality Commission regulations and health and social care legislation promoting person centered safe care, support and treatment.

We will review the compliance around the regulations, discuss good practices and poor practices and evaluate the quality statements aligned to food, nutrition and safe care.

Reference will also be made to the Care Home Digest for nutrition and hydration.

There will be some hints and tips on how to use mealtimes as an opportunity to gather feedback from people using the service with quality conversations and demonstrate safe, effective, caring team working

There will be an exclusive live demonstration mid-session looking at preparing and serving fortified textured foods using the IDDSI framework.

We all can appreciate IDDSI does not start half an hour before service. It starts from the moment you cut that first carrot and cook that meat.

This is a hands-on demonstration and not death by PowerPoint, mainly aimed Managers and Care teams, Chefs and family members who may like to bring in boiled sweets for a loved one (who is on a level 4 diet) and feels it's okay because they can suck the sweets.

Within care home we are very concerned regarding choking instances. In this session  we talk about tracking systems to spot trends, backed up with practical training.

This masterclass will support all stakeholders to understand the IDDSI framework and compliance and governance around nutrition and hydration in Social Care.

The session will ensure you fully understand the IDDSI framework whilst being a  service able to manage mealtimes safely, effectively  offering a dignified dining experience.
