This conference focuses on developing and accelerating locally driven ward & unit accreditation programmes for quality. These approaches can be used as a tool to encouraging ownership of continuous quality improvement at ward, unit or service level, reduce variation and increase staff pride and team working within their practise. Through practical case studies of organisations that have successfully introduced locally driven ward and unit accreditation systems the conference will provide practical guide to implementing systems, and improving staff engagement in driving forwards improvement for the benefit of patients, service users and communities.
“A commitment to excellence is something we know well in health and care. Something seen day-in, day-out as staff work tirelessly to elevate the quality of care and improve the lives of people… Evidence tells us that those who strive for excellence achieve better outcomes… The pursuit of excellence is something within each of our gift, something we should support and encourage.”
Duncan Burton, Chief Nursing Officer for England and Executive Director NHS England 2024
“Locally driven ward and unit accreditation programmes provide a comprehensive tool to assess the quality of care delivered to patients, bringing together several measures in a single overarching framework. Reported outcomes of locally driven ward accreditation include reduced variation in care delivery, increased assurance of care quality and improved staff motivation.”

“Nursing, midwifery and care staff as part of their everyday practice are well-placed to identify opportunities for transformational change… To support this, locally driven ward and unit accreditation approaches provide us with the tools to undertake a comprehensive assessment of quality of care within our services and organisations. It does this by bringing together key measures into a single overarching framework, from across clinical care as relevant to our staff and to those who use our services.”
